Welcome to silencia.net, a personal blog and professional portfolio website. I am Ang, a 26 yr old web designer and kickboxer from northern Minnesota. I have a full-time job, a car, a house, 3 cats, and a moderate phobia of taxidermy. I enjoy stand-up comedy, movies, books, technology, genetic anomalies, history, Dave Attell, Dexter, money, and pizza. What more do you need to know?!

I hate having yard sales.
But I do like making money off my junk that I don’t want anymore. Trade-offs. I did manage to make a little money. Sold most everything but 2 boxes of stuff, and some books and VHS tapes that will be donated to the library. So I made out pretty well.
It’s amusing the people who frequent yard sales. Older ladies who you know have some money, but would much rather bargain you down to next to nothing for everything. Moms (who had nothing to buy from me since I don’t have kids). Trashy people who wander around mid-day in pajama pants, stained over-sized t-shirts and Crocs, looking (and smelling) like they haven’t showered in weeks. I met a lot of my neighbors, but of course they say things like “I live over there”, and point off in some direction. So I have no idea where they live. Some had stories to tell of the man who lived in my house before me. The elderly lady next door (who I had never seen in the YEAR I’ve lived here) was quite sweet.
The bargain ladies were at my sale Saturday morning BEFORE my advertised hours, as I was setting up. And they were already trying to get lower prices. If you’re going to do that, wait until I’m about to pack up for the day and I’m looking to get rid of things for cheap. Not when I just set up am STILL setting up, and have hope that I might get my asking prices.
I am SO happy I got rid of the piles of stuff I had in my living room, waiting to go out in the yard sale. I still have my desk that I was trying to sell, but my mum is planning to take that next week. I found a new glass and metal desk (no more particle board in my life!) that I want from Best Buy, but they don’t have it in stock. And, ridiculously, you cannot order it online and have it shipped to the store and go pick it up (to avoid shipping costs). They only let you do that if the store you want to pick it up from already has it in stock… so why would you even order it online? Ridiculous. I will be checking their availability this week. They had better assist me in some way to order the item I want. That is piss-poor customer service if I have to call them every day to try to get a fucking desk. I tried finding a similar desk from another store, but what they had cost more than the one I really want from Best Buy. So here’s hoping. Right now my desktop computer is sitting on a card table. But I had it on the floor for like a week now, so I guess the card table is a step up. I want a new desk!
In need of some fun.
It turns out I’m getting some pretty good bank from my taxes this year. So I’m going to New York City, baby! My plan is to go the week of my birthday, which is May 13. Well, not a whole week, maybe 4 days. Hit up the Comedy Cellar and AMNH, eat some pizza, meet some friends! A couple of people have offered their couches for me, so I don’t have to worry about lodging. As soon as my tax money hits my bank account, I am purchasing my plane tickets and celebrating.
I’m trying to keep my plans fairly open. I don’t want to be running around from one destination to the next, trying to cram in a ton of stuff. I want to have time to just wander around and enjoy myself. That was the bummer when I was in Mexico with a group in 2000. The schedule was so packed, I hardly felt like I was even there. I hope to make future trips to NYC, so it’s not like I need to see everything in one shot.
Check out stand-up comedian, and my friend, LeAnn Diler! I just made her a website. There are a couple videos posted of her doing stand-up.
And have you seen my sexy new hair cut and color? Silly photos ahead. (more…)
Oy with the busy.
I’m still in awe of my non-stop life. I vaguely remember the days of coming home after work and doing nothing but watching TV. Seeing a few friends once every few months. Mostly just spending my time alone at home. Now I’m kickboxing most days after work. The occasional business workshop (this week: bookkeeping!). Weekly friend gatherings Mondays (wrestling night) and Saturdays (game night). Last weekend I played Rock Band for the first time. I suck, but it was fun. I have an aversion to singing in public, but I played the guitar and drums. I’m almost OK on the Easy setting. But rocking comes from the crotch, right?
I’m also working on some web projects. I think I’ve discovered that I don’t hate web design, just the lame projects I work on at work. There is nothing enjoyable about a website for a credit union or accounting firm. But a website for a stand-up comedian, or a film company, or actors? Fun! Interesting! Especially when they are for darling friends.
I am thinking about taking a trip to New York City in May (tentative!). I want to see the Comedy Cellar and Caroline’s. Check out the comedy clubs in a big city. And the geek in me must visit the American Museum of Natural History. Taxidermy phobia be damned! I’ve been wanting to make the trip for years, since I love comedy and NYC seems to be the place to see it. And now that I want to open my own comedy club, I have even more reason to go there. Bonus: meeting some of my clients and friends in the city! Oh the fun that will be had.
Must step up the intensity at the gym!
I haven’t worn contacts in years, but I’ve been trying them again recently. I think I found a kind that doesn’t bother me so much. I have very sensitive eyes. And I got new glasses. Twice actually. The first pair kind of washed out on my face from a distance. But up close they were cute! See photo. Now I’m trying another style.
My 1 year old niece discovered my nose ring and earrings today. Her fascination was adorable!
Hi, my life went from zero to sixty.
Before this week, every day of my life was pretty fucking lame. Weekdays, I get up and go to work, then go home at 5pm and watch movies or TV by myself until it was bedtime. Wake up, repeat. Weekends I would typically do not much more than watch more movies at home. Sounds relaxing, right? Mostly it was just boring.
This week I started kickboxing again. I kickboxed for a little more than a year, then stopped in May of 2007, to try to save some money to buy a house. Thirty pounds gained and much strength lost later (I used to be able to do 43 pushups in a minute - now I can do 17), I decided it was high time to get my jiggly fatass back to the gym.
I also started a business planning workshop. This is only once a week for the next month, and there’s also homework (writing the business plan, doing research).
And while I was living my lame sedentary life of doing mindless stuff alone, I started laying the groundwork for being more social. Which consisted of watching wrestling on Monday nights with a group of friends. I don’t like wrestling, it’s just an excuse to get together with people. And I started a game night with another group of friends, where we play Scrabble and make fun of each other.
So. This past Sunday night was the start of the kickboxing fitness program. Monday after work I kickboxed for an hour and then attended the wrestling gathering. Tuesday night was 2 hours of working out. Wednesday was an hour of kickboxing and an hour or so of helping my mom’s friend figure out how to make the iPod she just bought work. Tonight I had a 3 hour business planning workshop session. Friday night I will be playing Scrabble and making fun of my friends. Saturday I will work out for 2 hours, go to some medical fair thing with my mom and her friend, visit my 1 year old niece for awhile, and then go to a birthday party in the evening at a casino/hotel. Sunday I will do my laundry, wash my dishes, clean up my house, and basically take care of everything else I’ve had no time for this week. And try to put in some time on starting my business plan and figure out what I need to research for it.
Makes me kinda miss just watching movies and TV. But it’s a good thing I guess.
I fell down the stairs.
Yep. That’s some excitement I could gladly do without. Just minding my own business, going down the stairs after getting ready for work, bringing my cereal bowl down to the kitchen. Next thing I know I’m flying through the air and then crashing down on my back onto my wood stairs. Shards of broken bowl everywhere. Me trying to get on my feet so I can reach around the corner into the kitchen for my purse before laying down on the floor and trying to BREATHE. The wind got knocked out of me pretty bad. Got my phone out of my purse and called mom, called the office since I didn’t figure I’d be feeling too great once the adrenaline subsided and the pain really kicked in. It was not a graceful fall.
I don’t think there was any serious injury. My insurance has changed as of January 1 and I don’t have any of the info (numbers, etc) for my new insurance to even go to urgent care or anything. I’m not paralyzed, so I think I’ll be ok anyway. My back just hurts when I walk, bend, sit, turn. And just hurts in general.
I’m partaking of the Advil and just trying to take it easy. After calling into work while laying on the kitchen floor, I got up to clean the broken bowl before the cats got into it (or clearly clumsy Ang steps on anything sharp). Discovered that using the broom and bending down to pick things up did not feel good. I knew those ballet pliés would be useful someday. So I laid on the couch and watched Rocky 3, then took a nap. Got up not long ago to have some lunch and try sitting at the computer for awhile to see how sitting feels. For the record, not fantastic. I’m not in any excruciating pain, but it definitely hurts.
