Mike Birbiglia: cool mutherfucker.

The show was awesome! The only comic I really knew that performed was Mike Birbiglia, but the others were pretty good. Mike mostly did older jokes that I knew before, but it was a treat to get to see them performed live. He had some new stuff that surprised me, but it was good. I’ll keep it vague so if there are any other Birbigs fans who read this, I won’t spoil the fun.

One of the best parts of the show, which wasn’t even a part of the show, was the guy sitting in front of Lenor, Jess, and me. He had a laugh exactly like Lewis from Revenge of the Nerds. And it was his real laugh. Everytime he would laugh at a joke, we’d crack up even harder. I told Mike he should have this guy travel with him, cause it just amped up the whole experience for us.

So after the show, the performers were signing stuff and selling merchandise, and my friends (Jess and Lenor) and I got into his line. I was like, shit, I have nothing for him to sign, so I had him sign my ticket. I already have all of his merchandise, much of which he signed when he sent me. So we get to the front of the line, and he didn’t know me cause we’d never met before, so I gave him my ticket and was like “you’ve already signed everything else I have” and he goes “are you Ang?!” Word, I rock. He had us hang out til he was done, then we all went out for a cigarette (except me) and chit-chatted for awhile.

I was expecting Mike to be a little more awkward, but he wasn’t at all, so far as I could tell. He was completely cool, it was great. Mike Birbiglia: cool mutherfucker. I was more awkard than him, thanks to nerves and antsiness from driving. Haha we talked about MySpace, and I guess he’s got a development deal with Comedy Central for his Secret Public Journal stuff, which should kick some ass whenever that comes about. I got some hugs, he was surprised at how far I had to drive (about 4 hours from Duluth to Mankato) and was all jazzed about trying to find a way to perform in Duluth. Just for freakin’ Ang, how cool am I. Yeah, that’s right. I have one picture that I’ll share as soon as I get it from Jess. Click “more” for the picture, below.

All in all, it was goodtimes. I got to meet Mike and he was super cool and a sweetheart. I met Lenor for the first time, I’ve known her online for like 6 years. I got to meet Jess’s mom and cats, and I am just nerdy enough to find that exciting. I’ll have to look into places here that could bring in the Birbigs to perform, and research any good pizza places to entice him.

(A little background: I run Birbigs.net, a fan network website, and designed some of Mike’s merchandise, like the stickers and Panda Porn Star tshirt. So there’s some history, I just haven’t met him or seen him perform before. Now I’m psyched to redesign the fan network site, and work on some more merchandise designs!)
